Description

23, 23A and 23B on High Street is a shop and dwelling built in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The shopfront was replaced in the mid-20th century. As of 2022, it is used as a shop with flats above.

The building is made of red brick laid in Flemish bond, with stucco dressings and a timber shopfront and eaves. The rear elevation is partially exposed and finished with roughcast render. The roof is believed to be covered with slate.

It has a rectangular plan facing west onto High Street and is surrounded on three sides by other buildings. Access to the rear is available via an alleyway from Victoria Street to the south and through a doorway in the partially-exposed south elevation.

The building stands three storeys tall under a pitched roof with a moulded timber cornice. The front elevation facing High Street is one bay wide. The ground floor features a timber shopfront with a brick base, framed by two pilasters and a large plate glass window, along with a modern door from Ironmongers Lane set within a moulded 19th-century doorframe that has a blocked overlight and a large fascia board with a moulded border.

On the first and second floors, there is one timber sash window each, featuring gauged brickwork flat-arch heads with enriched stucco keystones. The first-floor window has eight-over-eight glazing, while the second-floor window has four-over-eight glazing, both with a stucco sill. Between these windows is a long, horizontal iron strap with forked ends.

The partially-exposed south elevation includes a timber door from the 20th century on the ground floor. The upper floors are jettied, and each carries a two-over-two glazed timber sash window with horns, set within a plain timber surround that is flush with the façade.
