Description
Lower Penalt is a farmhouse dating from the 18th century, with alterations made in the late 19th and 20th centuries. It features a sandstone rubble plinth and a brick structure topped with a hipped slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan facing northeast and was originally designed with a left-of-centre entrance and end stacks. It stands three storeys tall with a basement, the basement being part of an earlier house. The eaves cornice is dentilled. There are four windows: two 2-light casements on the upper floor, one 3-light window to the left, and two 3-light windows to the right of the former doorway, which now has a semi-circular shaped head and has been converted into a 2-light window. To the right, there is a square-headed stone doorway leading to the basement. The house is situated on elevated ground at right angles to the lane and is flanked by two barns.
