Description
The suspension footbridge over the River Wye, located at National Grid Reference SO5649328019, is a Grade II listed structure, likely built around 1875 with later alterations. It features a plaque with raised lettering that reads: "LOUIS HARPER A.M.I.C.E. / MAKER / ABERDEEN." The bridge is constructed from rock-faced sandstone ashlar, concrete, breeze blocks, brick, cast-iron, steel cables, and wood.
Stone piers on each river bank support a pair of braced cylindrical tapered columns topped with spiked ball finials. Steel cables are suspended from these columns, supporting a wooden boardwalk. The main cables extend outward from the columns and are secured under ramped approaches made of stone, concrete, breeze blocks, and brick. The approaches are adorned with cast-iron railings and gates, with some of the main posts also featuring ball finials. The maker's plaque is positioned on the south side of the horizontal brace between the southern pair of main columns.
