Description

The former farmhouse at Penrhyn is a 17th-century building constructed of rubble stone, topped with an undulating old slate roof. It is situated downhill and aligned with a farm building at the upper end. The house features three bays and has a narrow dairy extension at the rear, which was likely originally a single storey but has since been raised. There is a timber door in the center bay that has been widened at some point, and a small window has replaced the original windows, which are now blocked. The building also has two very small raking dormers in the former attic. The gable end fireplace has had its stack removed, and the gable end wall is slightly battered. At the upper end, there is one casement window, a timber door, and a gable stack with weathercoursing and a blocked opening on its side. The rear of the building features a small single-light window at the upper end, but is otherwise mostly unlit.

Inside, the 17th-century house has been stripped of its original features since it became a farm building. There is a large gable end fireplace with an ovolo moulded timber lintel, and an ovolo-moulded floor beam, with a section of another beam repurposed as a lintel for the widened door. The stair is noted to be in the end bay of the house, beyond a stud and plank partition indicated by mortices, and against the stone cross wall, which now has an introduced door leading to the former animal house. The dairy wing also included a stair, added when the structure was heightened and the stable loft was converted into a bedroom. At the upper end, there are 19th-century features for a washhouse, with the chimney hood and stack removed. The building has collar beam trusses, with the northeast truss within the dwelling having its soffits grooved for a partition.
