Description
The building comprises a Bethel chapel, a small meeting house (Ty-capel), a schoolroom, and an associated teacher's house, dating from the 18th century. The chapel is constructed of squared and coursed local stone with limestone quoining, and has a hipped slate roof. The symmetrical front elevation features three bays, with the central bay set forward and gabled. A single-storey, hip-roofed porch extends forward, sheltering the entrances, and is distinguished by boot scrapers on either side. The centre of the porch is open, with two gates and spear-headed railings. Four-panelled doors with a grained finish lead into the chapel. Above the porch are twin, margin-glazed windows with segmental heads, and a framed datestone in the gable. Each side bay has tall 12-pane fixed light windows.
Attached to the right and set back is the single-bay caretaker's house. It has a 12-paned sash window to the ground floor, a 9-pane window above, and a modern door, all with heavy stone lintels, and a gable stack. A lean-to is located at the side, with a boarded door, and a modern extension is present to the rear.
The schoolroom is attached and set back to the left of the chapel. It is a single-storey structure with rendered walls and a slate roof running lengthwise to the road. The roof terminates in the 2-storey gabled teacher's house. A central gabled porch provides access to the schoolroom, featuring a framed and battened door and overlight. Two small windows are located to the side. The teacher's house is two bays deep, featuring a central stack, a rear door, and an end lean-to.
The spear-headed front railings to the right of the chapel, extending over Ty-capel, are set on a stone wall and include a gate matching those of the chapel. A gate and railings to the schoolroom are of a similar design but date to 1903.
Inside the chapel, the ceiling is divided by two ornamented, deep cross beams into three transverse compartments. The chapel retains extensive pine pews, seating approximately 280 people, with a central bank and cross benching raked towards the sides. A panelled enclosure to the set fawr includes a balustered crowning gallery with rounded corners, and steps leading to the pulpit, also galleried. A window is located in the recess behind the pulpit. A reading desk is provided with a drawer. Two memorial tablets are fixed to the walls, commemorating the dead of both World Wars.
The schoolroom has a 3-bay open roof and ceiling, with a central ventilation rose. A pine dado runs along the walls. The room is furnished with iron-framed, reversible benches incorporating hinged writing desks. Steps at the end lead to a door to the adjoining teacher’s house.
