Description

Melin Voelas is a building constructed from local stone rubble, featuring large unshaped quoins and a slate roof that was renewed in 1988-1989. The structure consists of an east-west range with the mill race located at the eastern end, and a south wing that projects towards the road at the eastern end, with a lean-to on its western side filling the angle. Access to the east-west range is provided by a door in the western gable. The building has small metal and timber-framed windows, mostly from the 20th century, and there is a door in the lean-to that opens onto the road.

The building houses a restored iron overshot water wheel mounted on brass bearings, capable of generating over 20 horse power, powered by water from a timber launder that is fed by a short channel from the mill pond located at the rear. The mill pond is supplied by a leat from the Afon Moch, a tributary of the Afon Nug. A sluice can be controlled from within the mill.

At the time of inspection, the building was locked and inaccessible, preventing any inspection of machinery or fittings. However, it is recorded to have three pairs of underdrift stones, including one pair of French Burr stones and another pair sourced from Gaerwen Mill on Anglesey. Additionally, it is reported to contain two corn drying kilns with perforated tile floors, an oatmeal sifter, and a Swiss silk dresser that was introduced around 1932.
