Description
The barn located to the south of Wall Hills Farmhouse is likely from the 15th century or earlier. It features a timber-frame construction with brick-filled square panel wall frames and cruck trusses, topped by a half-hipped plain tiled roof that has been raised at a later date. The barn is designed in a T-plan, consisting of a three-bay east-west range and a two-bay north-south section, which were formerly two separate barns; the east-west section was likely originally five bays long. There is a wagon entry at the west end, which was previously the central entry of the long barn, and a second entry at the east end of the long barn. Inside, the long barn has four cruck trusses, which are braced to the sill-beam with large swept braces, while the smaller barn contains three cruck trusses. All the timbers used are of substantial size, generally halved, and the cruck blades are paired.
