Description
The threshing barn at Old Monkton Farm is believed to date mainly from the 18th century, although it may incorporate some earlier materials.
The barn is timber framed, covered externally with weatherboarding, and topped with a modern corrugated sheet roof. It is situated roughly in the center of the farm and oriented east-west, enclosing what was once the northern side of the farmyard. The exterior features mostly timber weatherboarding, with some brick sections and few openings. The threshing doors are located at the western end of the building.
Inside, the barn's timber frame is exposed. It consists of seven bays with trusses that have angle struts, supported by central posts that define the bays. The framing mainly consists of square panels with some bracing, and there is significant evidence of reused timbers. Many of the timbers have holes, indicating that the original panel infilling was likely made of staves and withies. A stone flagged threshing floor partially remains.
