Description
Shire Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the late 17th century to the early 18th century. It features a deep sandstone rubble plinth and a timber frame with brick and plaster infill, topped with a tiled roof. The cottage has two external stone stacks with brick shafts, one located at the rear and the other on the left gable. It consists of two unequal structural bays and includes a cellar, with one storey and an attic above.
On the ground floor, there are two wrought-iron casement windows, which may date from the 18th or early 19th century, positioned to the left and right, along with a 2-light fixed window from the 20th century to the left of centre. The cottage also features two gabled late 19th-century dormers, each with 2-light casements. At the rear, there is a lean-to catslide extension, likely from the 18th century, which envelops the side stack. Access to the cottage is through a glazed porch added in the 20th century at the rear. The timber frame has three panels high from the plinth to the wall-plate and includes angle struts from the top of the post that divides the two bays. There is a cellar entry located at the front side of the plinth.
