Description
12 King Street is a shop and dwelling that dates from the late 18th century, with a core that may date back to the 17th century. The building is constructed of painted brick and features a hipped Welsh slate gable roof. It has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, with a two-window range that includes late 19th-century 2/2 sash windows in a broad case, and a blocked light to the right, both set under brick segmental arches. The building has moulded wood eaves and a pilaster on the left side. The late 19th-century shop front has a recessed entrance to the right, which includes a part-glazed panelled door and a casement overlight. The shop front also features ringed glazing shafts, a moulded fascia-board, and a hood supported by consoles on panelled pilasters.
Inside, there is a 19th-century winder staircase. In the attic, there are chamfered purlins with cusped windbraces and a 17th-century mutilated truss that was formerly fitted with V struts, along with a probable trenched purlin. The second floor has chamfered purlins and an exposed truss. The first floor showcases exposed 17th-century timber-framing, a jowelled chamfered post with a curved brace, chamfered ceiling beams, and a plank door. There are also two massive posts exposed, with a probable third, and exposed box framing that may date to the 17th century or earlier. On the ground floor, there is a stop-moulded ceiling beam and exposed box framing from the 16th or 17th century.
