Description

The building is a barn and cowhouse located about 20 yards southwest of Lower Llanrosser Farmhouse, likely dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of rubble with corrugated iron roofs and features an L-plan layout. The structure is two stories high with three bays and two windows on the part oriented roughly north-south, while a one-storey range runs east-west, with lean-to extensions to the west and north.

The two-storey section has a gable facing south, a central entrance, and window openings above the west side that are concealed by a late 20th-century corrugated iron lean-to. Underneath this lean-to are almost complete oak mullioned windows in the north and south bays. The one-storey range has two entrances located next to each other near the junction with the two-storey part. The east gable end features a dripstone above a central ground floor window and a gable window above it, with the ground floor window having holes for four diamond-section mullions.

Inside, the north bay of the two-storey section contains a fireplace with a stop-chamfered mantel-lintel above and an adjacent newel stair, which is lit by a splayed window with oak treads to the west. This former principal room is now divided into four loose boxes with racks and troughs. The trusses have raking struts supporting the rafters from tie-beams, and a second fireplace is visible in the roof space above the main one. On the north side of the east bay of the one-storey range, there is an oak mullioned window that looks into a rubble lean-to extension. A rubble cross-wall with a low door separates the easternmost bay from the others. The trusses in this section are simple A-frames with three purlins, heavy ties, and collars, with the east gable being rubble-filled. This building is an important survivor, showcasing many interesting features typical of the local L-plan longhouse style.
