Description
Massington Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, which was remodeled in the mid-17th century and again around 1810 to 1820. The building features fragments of timber-framing but is primarily constructed of red brick. It has a hipped roof covered with plain tiles and a brick cornice with modillions. There are rubble and brick stacks, with one at the rear that has diagonal shafts. The farmhouse is arranged in an L-plan, with a rear wing at the northeast.
The exterior includes four windows plus one in the right wing, featuring 16-pane glazing bar sash windows that are tripartite on the ground floor and set under cambered heads. A string course runs above the ground floor, and there is a later 19th-century canted bay on the right. The entrance features an off-centre panelled door and a porch supported by octagonal Tuscan columns.
Inside, the farmhouse has wide ovolo moulded beams in the former cross-passage and the large room to the right, which serves as the hall, while the left room has stop-chamfered beams. The rear wing retains some timber-framing, a blocked 4-centre headed doorway, and a 19th-century door beneath a lintel decorated with a blank arcade of cinquefoils and a moulded cornice above. On the first floor, there are portions of moulded wall posts and 15th-century arch-braces.
