Description

SO 74 SW COLWALL CP PETTY FRANCE

3/85 Lower Lodge, gate-piers and gates -

GV II

Former lodge to Hope End (qv). Early - mid C19 perhaps by J C Loudon, extended c1975. Rendered with hipped slate roof and bargeboards. Octagonal plan abbreviated in C20 extension to rear and side. Single storey. Road front effectively consists of an angled bay to the left hand side with 2, 4 and 2-light ogee-headed leaded casements, eaves raised as gables over the outer ones, the centre one itself an angled bay with canopied lead hood; the octagonal shape is continued in the return to the left beyond the wall linking the gate-piers; this wall is now pierced by an archway leading to glazed C20 entrance lobby at the side. Octagonal capped gate-piers are linked to the Lodge by a moulded string and have recessed quatrefoiled panels, a motif which is repeated in the wrought iron gates themselves. Interior: the roof of the octagon incorporates very heavy hip beams; unusual remote-controlled catches to 2 original casements: one in the lobby and one in the front room. (CL, 17th October 1968).
