Description
East Lodge and Gate Piers at Broomhall Policies were built in 1889-1890 and consist of a single-storey, three-bay lodge house. The building is rendered, with an ashlar eaves course on all sides except for the porch and a later rear extension, which features a half-timbered porch.
On the northeast (principal) elevation, there is a bipartite window to the right with a stone mullion and ashlar surrounds that hug the eaves. To the far left is a plain section, while the central and left sections are advanced and feature a tripartite window on the left with timber mullions and an ashlar cill course that extends to the front and returns. An arched timber entrance is located to the right, framed by ashlar quoins at the base, a panelled timber door set back, ashlar surrounds, and a fanlight above. The gable is half-timbered with advanced timber bargeboards.
The southeast elevation includes an advanced central bow window supported by a bracket below, and there is a flat-roofed extension to the far left. The southwest elevation features a flat-roofed extension that is not visible from the street, added in 2000. The northwest elevation has an advanced central bow window with a bowed stone section below and a stone cill course. A door is located to the far right in the extension.
The lodge has varied glazing and a piended slate roof that is slightly swept at the eaves, with the original Rosemary tiles removed and replaced with slate. The rear extension has a flat roof, while the porch has a pitched slate roof. The building features a shouldered, corniced ridge stack and ashlar quoins.
The interior was not seen in 2000.
The gate piers are tall, solid square-pan piers set on a plinth, topped with a cornice and pyramid cope stones. They are accompanied by attached quadrant walls made of rock-faced stone with curved coping stones.
