Description
The belfry located approximately 5 meters north-east of the Church of St Mary is a detached structure with origins dating back to the early 13th century. It was reconstructed during the 15th to 16th centuries when an ambulatory was added, and the internal structure was altered. Further remodeling occurred in the 17th century with the addition of the spire. The belfry has undergone restorations in 1898, 1950, and 1982-83 by Leonard Baart Associates.
This timber-framed belfry features a later added sandstone rubble wall at the lower stage and is clad in weatherboard. It has a lower hipped roof and an upper pyramidal roof covered with stone slates, while the spire is finished with shingles. The square tower has an octagonal plan wall enclosing an ambulatory at the ground stage, with the entrance located on the south-west side. The belfry consists of three diminishing stages, culminating in the spire, which has clock faces on the west and north sides, along with loop vents on three sides and a pair of similar openings on the east side.
The broad doorway features triple moulding on the jambs and a wooden lintel. Inside, the timber-framed structure of the tower is visible, with four massive corner posts that survive from the earlier structure, showing mortices that indicate the position of the former internal bracing. The current bracing likely dates from the 15th or 16th centuries and includes small horizontal and vertical members with diagonal struts. Additional reinforcing braces have been added during later restorations.
