Description
Ye Old Steppes is an early 16th-century house and shop, with additions from the 17th century and alterations in the late 19th century. It is constructed with square-panelled timber-framing and wattle-and-daub infill, set upon a sandstone rubble plinth. The roof is a mix of Welsh slate and Bradstone slate. The building has an irregular plan, consisting of an original east/west range to which a north/south wing was added in the 17th century, and further extensions to the south. An entrance is on the west side. The north front displays the gable end of the cross-wing on the left, featuring a decorative bargeboard. There is a seven-light mullioned window on the first floor, and a large three-light 19th-century canted bay window on the ground floor. To the right, another three-light window sits above a matching canted bay window on the ground floor, which also provides access to the cellars. A heavy ledged cellar entrance with slit vents is located on the lower left. The upper storey of the earlier wing was originally jettied.
