Description
Yew Tree Cottage is a house that likely dates back to the 14th century, with extensions from the 17th century, some alterations from the 18th century, and restoration in the mid-20th century. It features a timber-frame structure with brick and rendered infill, and is partially clad in brick. The building has an L-plan layout, with a 17th-century cross-wing extending to the north and a 14th-century cruck hall range to the east.
On the south gable of the cross-wing, there is a large external rubble stack with a brick shaft, and another rubble stack is inserted in the center of the hall. The south front has two storeys, with a gabled cross-wing to the left and a raised section from the 18th century to the right, which is lower at the extreme right. The front features one and two windows, including a 2-light and a 3-light casement, and to the right, a 3-light window with diamond-patterned wooden mullions. The ground floor has two 2-light casements flanking a 3-light casement under a segmental head. The entrance is located on the west front of the cross-wing.
The framing of the cross-wing consists of four square panels high, with three struts to the collar and V-struts in the apex of the south gable truss. A cruck truss is visible in the east gable. The interior has not been inspected, but it is reported to contain another cruck truss and possibly a remnant of a spere truss.
