Description
Box Tree Cottage is a house that dates from the 15th or 16th century, with a 17th-century added wing. It has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed, featuring parts made of wattle-and-daub and painted brick infill, with a sandstone plinth and brick refacing on the added wing. The roof is tiled and dates from the 20th century.
The earlier wing is a single bay, aligned east to west, with a cross-wing to the east. There is a central entrance that may have had a through-passage leading to a stack. The cottage is single storey with an attic. The south front has a 20th-century flat-roofed dormer that contains a two-light window, and there is a 20th-century casement window with two lights on the gable end of the wing. A lean-to canopy covers the entrance, which has a ledged door.
The earlier wing retains two cruck trusses with an inserted floor. The framing shows altered square panelled framing, which previously had two and three square panels from the sill to the wall-plate. The west gable end has 20th-century surface timbering.
