Description

The Old House is a house located on Whitehall Road in Hampton Bishop. It has a core that dates back to the 15th or 16th century, with extensions made in the 18th century and alterations in the mid-19th century, followed by restoration in the 20th century. The building features a timber-framed structure with sections of wattle-and-daub and brick infill, along with a sandstone plinth. The roof is covered with double Roman tiles and has a half-hip on the west side.

The house has an L-shaped plan, originally consisting of a three-bay cruck hall that runs east to west, with a later addition to the east and a wing extending to the north at the east end. There is a former through-passage and an axial chimney in the earlier wing, with an east lateral stack in the later wing. The building is single storey with an attic, and an inserted floor in the earlier wing. The windows are irregularly placed, primarily featuring 2-light 20th-century glazing bar casements, along with two glazing bar sash windows in the gable end of the north wing. A lean-to porch is located at the angle of the house, featuring a 20th-century door. The framing is irregular, with two and three square panels. Inside, the earlier wing displays exposed cruck trusses, with the central truss largely intact, and there is evidence of smoke blackening in the attic.
