Description
The Newman monument, located about 2 yards south-east of the Church of the Holy Trinity, is a Grade II listed headstone dedicated to Thomas Newman, who died in 1755. It is made of sandstone and features inscription panels set between fluted Corinthian pilasters, topped with a foliated design that includes a central human head. The inscription reads:
"My sudden Death Dear Friends do not Lament But think what pains for us Christ underwent To save us Mortals from Eternal Pain He suffered Death and rose to Life again Through whose merits I from Death am free To life in Bliss to all Eternity."
This monument is a notable example of local craftsmanship.
