Description
53 St Owen Street is a former house, now used as shops, with origins dating from the late 18th century to a core from the 17th century. The building features a stone plinth and is constructed of brick, topped with a slate and plain tile roof. It has a capped and rendered brick end stack on the left side. The layout includes a central staircase plan with a rear wing.
The structure stands three storeys high and has a five-window range, with five 20th-century, four-light sash windows set beneath brick segmental arches, and two blocked four-light casements. A moulded and modillioned cornice runs along the top. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door with a fanlight, set in a round-headed case made of stone and wood, featuring a fluted architrave and a keyed Roman arch, all beneath a detached modillion stone hood. Flanking the entrance are 20th-century shop windows, and there is a brick modillion band above. The left gable has been altered with 20th-century brick and render.
Inside, there is an early 19th-century winder staircase with stick balusters. On the second floor, there are four plank doors with ogee heads and exposed early 17th-century timber framing. The first floor features a seven-panel door, a six-panel door, a ceiling cornice, an 18th-century fireplace, a five-panel door, a chamfered ceiling beam, and panelling. The ground floor includes a round-headed architrave, a chamfered ceiling beam, probable posts, a plank door, and a coved ceiling.
