Description

Chandos House, now shops and flats, dates from the early 18th century. It is located in St Owen Street, Hereford. The building is of double-depth plan and has a symmetrical facade of three storeys and an attic, with a five-window range. The lower section is constructed of brick with a moulded sandstone plinth, and the roof is slate, featuring a brick end stack on the right. The windows are 3/3 sash windows set under gauged brick flat arches on the first and second floors. A central entrance features an 18th-century eight-panel door with an overlight, set within a plain doorcase topped by an arched hood with a scrolled pediment supported by fluted Corinthian pilasters. Modern shop fronts are set under a moulded brick cornice. The rear of the property has an 18th-century six-panel door within a plain case. Inside, an 18th-century open-well staircase features a moulded rail, turned newels, and a panelled dado. The first-floor front room has 18th-century panelling and a coved ceiling. On the ground floor left, within the shop area, there is 18th-century panelling, a cornice, and a moulded architrave to the rear door.
