Description

Forty Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the 17th century and has undergone later alterations. It features a timber frame with brick infill, weatherboards, and a roof made of Welsh slate. The cottage has an external sandstone end stack with a brick shaft. It consists of two structural bays that are aligned roughly east to west and is two storeys high.

The north elevation includes four windows, which consist of 2- and 4-pane 20th-century casements and sashes in the weatherboarded upper storey. The ground floor has two contemporary 2-light casements set in the exposed timber framing. The projecting upper storey is supported by a bressummer, with straight-cut chamfer-stops resting on three curved braces that rise forward from the main wall-posts. At the rear, there is a glazed door from the late 20th century. Inside, the cottage features heavy chamfered ceiling beams.
