Description
The ruins of Wilton Castle and the attached house to the south date back to around 1300. The castle was partly demolished to make way for a 16th-century house, which later fell into disrepair and was adapted into a smaller house in the early 19th century. The structure features sandstone rubble, ashlar, tufa, and rendered brick, with Welsh slate roofs. The original layout was roughly rectangular, oriented from north-north-east to south-south-west, and included corner towers and an interval tower to the east. The north-east and south-east towers have largely been demolished, while the large south-west tower likely served as the gatehouse. The south-east corner tower and part of the south curtain were removed for the 16th-century house, of which the west end was later adapted into the 19th-century house. Surviving sections of the curtain walls and towers stand approximately 25 to 30 feet tall. The 16th-century house remains as a two-storey shell with remnants of mullioned and transomed windows. The 19th-century portion features rendered brick, Welsh slate roofs, and brick end stacks. The east elevation has two storeys with two sash windows that include angled glazing bars, and a 19th-century panelled door on the south side of a crenellated projection to the right. There is also a single-storey 19th-century extension to the left, which has one large glazing bar sash. Wilton Castle is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, County No 37.
