GV II
Gate-piers, overthrow, flanking walls, steps and retaining walls. Circa 1885. Gate-piers are sandstone ashlar, square section with chamfered corners and battered front faces; cappings have diminutive Lombard friezes and chamfered upper sides. Overthrow is of twisted wrought iron rising to ornate wrought- iron lantern with sides tapering towards base and topped by a cross. Flanking walls extending to north and south are of finely coursed square sandstone with ridged tile-copings. Steps are of sandstone in four separate groups between the gate-piers and the east entrance of the Church of St Catherine (qv). Retaining walls to north and south sides of steps are aligned east/west and of finely coursed rock-faced squared sandstone. The gate-piers, overthrow, flanking walls, steps and retaining walls together form the carefully designed main approach and framed composition to the Church of St Catherine (qv).
