Description

The gate piers, overthrow, flanking walls, steps, and retaining walls are located to the east of the Church of St Catherine and date from around 1885. The gate piers are made of sandstone ashlar, featuring a square section with chamfered corners and sloping front faces. The cappings have small Lombard friezes and chamfered upper edges. The overthrow consists of twisted wrought iron that rises to an ornate lantern, which tapers towards the base and is topped with a cross. The flanking walls extend about 6 feet to the north and south and are constructed of finely coursed square sandstone with ridged tile copings. The steps, made of sandstone, are arranged in four separate groups between the gate piers and the east entrance of the church. The retaining walls on the north and south sides of the steps are aligned east to west and made of finely coursed rock-faced squared sandstone. Together, these elements create a carefully designed main approach and framed composition for the Church of St Catherine.
