Description

This barn, located about 50 yards north-north-west of Upper Pengethley, was built in 1820, as indicated by a plaque. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and features brick arches, topped with a roof made of Welsh slate and sandstone slate. The barn has ten bays that are aligned roughly east to west. The south elevation is partially obscured by early 20th-century sheds and includes two rows of vent slits arranged in an unusual echelon pattern. To the extreme left, there is a small entry with a brick arch, and there are two large opposed full-height entries with ledged two-leaved doors leading to the threshing floors, located about a third of the way from each end. These opposed entries have cambered brick heads. Inside, the barn has five bays to the west with king-post trusses and five bays to the east featuring plain collars and tie-beams.
