Description
Gate House Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to the 16th century, with extensions from the 17th century and partial rebuilding in the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries, along with some late 20th-century restoration. The structure features a timber frame with rendered infill, which has been rebuilt in coursed rubble and brick, all covered by a tile roof. The building has an L-plan layout, with the 16th-century range located to the east, featuring a lateral stack on the north wall. The 17th-century range is to the south and includes a central axial stack.
The west front of the farmhouse has two storeys, with the left side rebuilt in 19th-century brick. This side features two 4-pane sash windows under plastered wedge lintels. On the ground floor, there is a 6-pane sash window to the left and an entrance to the right, which has a four-panel door, an overlight, and a wedge lintel. To the right, there is a section rebuilt in 18th-century rubble, which includes a 2-light and a 3-light casement window on each floor.
The framing of the 16th-century range is visible from the south, showcasing a jettied first floor with a chamfered bressummer supported by carved brackets that rise from pilasters. The walls consist of four square panels high, with straight angle braces. The upper floor of the 17th-century range has framing that is two square panels high. Inside, the farmhouse features heavily moulded ceiling beams with chamfered and stopped subsidiary beams.
