Barn And Adjoining Outbuilding About 40 Yards East Of Great House Farmhouse

The barn and adjoining outbuilding, located about 40 yards east of Great House Farmhouse, likely date from the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The structure is timber-framed and weatherboarded, resting on a rubble base, and features a corrugated metal roof. It consists of five bays oriented east to west, with a central wagon bay that has opposing cart entries and double doors.

Inside, the wall-frame includes three rows of panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate, with some short straight braces in the upper corners. The roof structure has altered collar and tie-beam trusses, with struts and V-struts above the collar at the ends and between bays four and five. There are also two intermediate tie-beam trusses with raking struts, as well as an intermediate collar and tie-beam truss with two struts, one of which is missing.

The adjoining outbuilding is constructed from similar materials, including some brick and boarded infill, and has a slate roof. It features four framed bays and two levels. The main north elevation includes two ground floor two-light windows, nine upper-level two-light windows, two shuttered loft openings, and four doors. Inside, the wall-framing consists of three panels from sill to wall-plate, and the roof has collar and tie-beam end trusses with struts, along with three intermediate tie-beam trusses featuring raking struts.
