Description
Olde Tavern is a public house dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with later 19th-century additions and alterations. It is constructed from grey sandstone that is thinly coursed, with sandstone and brick at the rear, and features a Welsh slate roof with ridge and mid-roof stacks.
The building has two storeys and presents a symmetrical elevation. The central entrance is sheltered by a lean-to timber porch, with square bay windows on either side that rise to gables above the eaves line. The windows are sash style.
Inside, there is a lobby area just inside the front door that includes a serving hatch for off-sales. The public bar to the left features a 19th-century bar counter with shelving behind, fixed bench seating in the bar window and on the rear wall, and built-in cupboards flanking the fireplace. To the right of the lobby is a lounge, which includes a very tall, curved settle that forms part of the corridor wall, along with fixed seating on the rear wall and in the bay window. The rear public room has a straight settle that defines the corridor and fixed wall seating, with sliding doors leading to both the lounge and the rear public room.
Historically, the establishment was known as the Railway Inn until around 1928. Olde Tavern is a little-altered and increasingly rare example of a small urban public house.
