Description

The gatehouse, located about 25 yards north-north-west of Butthouse, is a Grade II* listed building. It features a ground floor with a sandstone rubble plinth, timber-frame construction, plaster infill, and a tiled cross-gabled roof. The structure has a square plan oriented north-north-west to south-south-east and stands two storeys tall.

On the north elevation, there is a central blocked 2-light mullioned and transomed window in the jettied first storey. Above this window, two round-headed panels are decorated with acanthus motifs, cartouches, and strawberry designs, with the left panel displaying a date. Flanking the window and panels are two pairs of lozenge-shaped panels. The scrolled bargeboards are adorned with dragons over carved brackets. The ground floor features a wide nail-studded low door, which includes a subsidiary segmentally headed door.

The south elevation mirrors these details but includes a shuttered moulded first-floor oriel supported by three shaped brackets and a mid-20th century door. The bressummer has an attached board with scrolls and dragons, likely a re-used bargeboard, and there is a nesting ledge above the oriel. The corner posts of the ground floor display remnants of rope designs, and above them are dragon beams. Inside, the dragon beams feature lamb's tongue run-out chamfer stops.
