Description

The gatehouse, dating from the 15th century, has undergone later alterations, including changes to the roof structure and restorations in the late 20th century. It is timber-framed with rendered infill, a rubble and hammer-dressed magnesian limestone plinth, and a pantile roof with the lower three courses made of stone slates. The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays, featuring a central carriage arch, while the left range was derelict at the time of the last survey. The frame is close-studded and includes tension braces.

The former entrance to the left range has a hollow-chamfered, basket-arched opening with carved spandrels. There are steps leading to two additional 20th-century fire exits on the first floor, likely within original openings. The current entrance is a 20th-century studded door located at the rear. The first floor jetties out at the ends and sides, supported by carved dragon posts with brattishing and grotesque carvings. The windows are 20th-century replacements, and the gable end is jettied.

In the left range, there is a chamfered plinth rising to a height of 0.75 metres, with three jowled posts and a wall plate featuring splayed scarf joints still standing, while a tie beam and other timbers were lying on the ground during the last survey.

Inside on the first floor, there are jowled posts and cambered tie beams with hollow chamfers, as well as arch braces adorned with Tudor roses and other carved motifs. The wall plate displays several splayed scarf joints, and the roof structure consists of trenched and collar purlins.
