Description

The Church of St Michael is a parish church located in Sollers Hope, dating from the 14th century with a restoration in the 19th century that included the addition of a north vestry and a bell turret in 1887. The church is constructed from sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a 20th-century tiled roof. The bell turret is timber-framed and has shingle cladding on its squat spire. The church consists of a nave with a bell turret and a south porch, a chancel, and a north vestry.

The nave has two trefoil-headed lights with tracery and a hoodmould to the right of the gabled south porch, which has an outer archway with responds, an outer moulded order, and an inner chamfered order. The chancel contains two trefoil-headed lights with a quatrefoil in the window to the right of a blocked chancel doorway.

Inside, the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHM) notes that the chancel and nave roofs date from the 14th century, featuring moulded and embattled wall-plates and trussed rafter roofs. The chancel arch has two chamfered orders and a two-centred arched head.

Fittings include a plain cylindrical font, possibly from the 13th century, set on a 20th-century base. Monuments within the church include a coffin lid, possibly from the 13th century, located in the chancel, which features a tapering slab with a decorative cross in a roundel and a male figure in military dress. There are also three other coffin lids in the west wall of the nave, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries.
