Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church located in White Ladies Aston. It dates back to the 12th century, featuring a nave and chancel from that period. The west bell-turret and nave roof were added around the 15th century, while the north aisle and vestry were constructed in 1861, followed by the addition of a south porch in 1864. The church is built of stone rubble with freestone dressings, and the bell-turret is weatherboarded timber-framed with a broach spire. The roofs are covered with plain tiles.
The chancel includes small round-headed lancets on the north and south sides, as well as in the east wall. There is a round-headed south doorway from the 12th century with imposts, and the south windows are 2-light with straight heads. Inside, the walls are plastered, and the nave ceiling is also plastered, concealing a 15th-century roof above that features curved braces to the collars and common-rafter couples. The chancel roof is ceiled, but one queen-post truss remains exposed. The chancel arch is deeply chamfered and has imposts. The north arcade, added in 1861, consists of three bays.
Inside the west end of the nave, there is a timber-framed bell-turret supported by timber posts, topped with a timber broach spire, and the bell-frame is intact. A medieval 12-sided font with ribs on the corners is present, along with 18th-century monuments on the chancel walls and Victorian furnishings throughout the church.
