Description
Abbey House dates to around 1600. It is a timber-framed building with closely spaced studs and plastered infill, covered by a slate roof with gabled ends. The house is two storeys high with an attic. The first floor projects over the ground floor, supported by a carved bressummer. The front has five windows, arranged asymmetrically. The windows are restored, with ovolo-moulded mullions and transoms, and two have gabled heads above the eaves. A narrow, two-storeyed bay is situated in the centre, built upon a brick base; older prints depict it as a bay on the first floor only. The left-hand side of the building has a base of red stone. A small first-floor canted bay and two-light oriel windows are also present. A 18th-century flush-panelled front door is approached by steps with a wrought-iron hand railing. A later 18th-century red brick extension is on the right, incorporating a Victorian timber-framed two-storeyed bay. The building forms a group with numbers 33 to 37 (odd), the Horseshoe Inn, and numbers 67, 71, and 73, with number 71 being recognized as a building of local interest.
