Description
St Cuthbert's, located at Nos 38 and 40 on The Homend, is a building that dates back to the 17th century but was refronted in the 18th century. The exterior is finished in stucco, featuring chamfered quoins and a tiled roof with a modillion eaves cornice. The building has two storeys with an attic and includes three curved roof dormers, each fitted with casements that have glazing bars. There are three sash windows with glazing bars, set beneath rusticated flat arches with keyblocks. The overall appearance is somewhat diminished by a large modern shop front that projects from the building. At the rear, some timber framing is exposed.
Inside, there is a part of the original staircase that retains turned balusters. No 40, which is attached to No 38, appears to be one building but is marked by quoins that indicate the division, and it has a continuous roof. This section features four sash windows similar to those in No 38. On the left side, there are wide carriage doors topped with a pediment and surrounded by a moulded architrave, leading to large double doors with fielded panels.
Nos 34 to 60 (even) and Nos 64 to 74 (even) are part of a group with St Cuthbert's.
