Description
A hall-house, dating from the 14th century, has been divided into two tenements and significantly altered in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The original timber frame has been refaced with brick on a sandstone rubble plinth, and the roof is covered in Welsh slate. The hall originally comprised six bays, with later stacks added to the east and west gable ends. Entrances are on the south front. Swan House occupies the left-hand side and contains two 9-pane glazing barn sash windows on the first floor, along with 12-pane glazing bar sash windows flanking a 5-panelled door with a plain overlight. School View is on the right and features three small 2-light casement windows on the first floor. Below, two 2-light casement windows are located to the left of a ledged door, which has a lean-to porch.
The interior of Swan House displays moulded main posts from the earlier core, along with a moulded and embattled wall-plate. There are five trusses, originally arch-braced (now cut), with moulded tie-beams, moulded collars, and cusped struts. The trusses also feature two tiers of moulded purlins and two tiers of cusped wind-bracing, all darkened by smoke. A cross-beamed ceiling, inserted later, has steeply chamfered beams. An open fireplace is present, featuring a chamfered surround.
