Description

Great House is a house dating from 1737, located in Canon Pyon. It is constructed of brick with limestone and sandstone dressings, featuring a hipped Welsh slate roof and brick stacks. The building has a T-plan layout with a garden front facing west, and it includes a cellar, two storeys, and attics.

The west elevation displays a symmetrical arrangement of windows with three sections, featuring glazing bar sashes. The outer windows are set in full-height bows, all topped with gauged brick heads. The façade includes a stone plinth, a plat band, and a moulded cornice beneath a flat coping. Each corner of the house has dated lead rainwater heads. A central Doric porch with two unfluted columns leads to the entrance, which features a frieze with lozenges containing paterae in metopes, and a cornice with projections above guttae and triglyphs. The doorway is adorned with a fluted architrave and an enriched fanlight, leading to glazed two-leaved doors that are likely from the late 19th century.

To the east, there is a projecting range with a dentilled brick eaves cornice and two entries, each flanked by columns. Inside, there is a repositioned three-flight oak open well staircase from the 18th century, featuring turned balusters and carved tread ends. Flanking brick walls extend approximately 15 yards to the north and south, each with a doorway; the southern one includes a wrought iron gate. It is suggested that the bows may not date from 1737, and if they do, this would represent an early example of a façade design that became popular later in the century.
