Description

The Byletts is a country house, now divided into apartments. It has a 17th-century core, but was substantially remodelled in the 1879 and altered in the 20th century. The house is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and a sandstone rubble plinth. Some square panelled timber framing survives internally. The brickwork on the west side of the house is in English bond and likely dates from the 17th century. It has a tiled roof and an L-shaped layout with a projecting porch on the south front and axial and end stacks. The house has three storeys, attics and cellars.

The south front is asymmetrical with a 2:1:2:1 bay arrangement. It features two-light stone mullioned windows with cross-mullioned windows on the ground floor. A projecting gabled three-storey porch has two string courses and rusticated quoins. Decorative polychrome brickwork appears in the gable, above a decorative three-light Tudor arched window with three trefoil-headed lights and pierced spandrels. The first floor has a square-headed three-light mullioned window. The outer doorway is Tudor arched with a two-centred arched head, and ledged double doors with decorative strap hinges. A gable end of a cross-wing projects to the right, featuring rusticated quoins, a string course and polychrome brickwork. A circular window is in the gable with a sexfoil, while the first floor has a four-light cross-mullioned window, and the ground floor has a similar window with decorative tracery.

The interior has been largely altered, but retains some dado panelling in a room on the first floor at the west side of the building.
