Description
A barn, stable and cow shelter, likely dating from the 18th century, with later 19th-century alterations. The barn is timber-framed with weatherboarding and a slate roof, comprising three bays aligned roughly east to west. It has a central full-height ledged door on the south side. Attached to the west side of the barn are stables, featuring timber framing with some weatherboarding, some late 19th-century brick rebuilding, and a plain tiled roof. Details include a ledged door in the left weatherboarded bay, stable doors under a segmental head in the central brick bay, and a further ledged door to the right bay. A cow shelter, forming a U-plan courtyard to the south of the stables, is constructed of rubble with a single-lapped slate roof. It has 3 bays open on each side with plain posts and contains a cider mill in the corner bay, with a segmental-headed rear entrance from the west. The interior of the barn features raking struts from ties to collars, thin framing timbers, square panels immediately below the wall plates, and rectangular, double-height frames with diagonal bracing. The building is part of a picturesque farmyard group separate from Downfield House (formerly Busy Hill).
