Description

Nos. 88, 90, and 92 on South Street in Leominster are three houses that were originally a barn, dating from the mid-17th century. They were likely converted and altered in the late 18th century, with additional changes made later. The buildings are timber-framed with colourwashed brick fronts and Welsh slate roofs featuring brick ridge stacks.

The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic, with a total of five windows across the front. No. 92, on the left, has three 6/6 unhorned sash windows on each floor, with the lower windows set under segmental brick arches. It also has a central doorway and a first-floor band. No. 90 features a two-light casement window above a two-light former shop window, with a six-panel door to the right. No. 88 has a 20th-century window on each floor and a part-glazed door to the left. All three houses have brick dentilled eaves.

At the rear, Nos. 88 and 90 have late 18th-century wings, along with various extensions. A fragment of the original framing is visible on No. 92.

Inside, the 17th-century roof trusses can be partly seen in the party walls and internal divisions of No. 92, which originally had four or perhaps five bays. The structure includes massive tie-beams, principals, and a ridge piece, originally supported by two tiers of purlins. Fragments of these purlins are still visible on the rear walls and may have been reused when the front was raised in the late 18th century. Some square panel framing is visible in the party walls and is reported to survive on the right gable wall, which is now covered by the adjoining house.
