Description

The Hawthorns is a house built around 1835. It features a front made of Flemish bond red brick, with the side and rear walls constructed in English garden-wall bond. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has gable ends, with brick stacks at the gable ends. The layout consists of two rooms with a central entrance and stair hall; the parlour is on the left and the kitchen on the right, which includes a scullery behind it in a three-storey integral outshut.

The exterior is three storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay south front. It includes 16-pane sash windows, with 4/8-pane sashes on the second floor, all featuring rubbed brick flat arches and stone sills. The central doorway has a plain wooden doorcase with flush panelled and glazed double doors that have margin glazing bars, although the porch is in a state of collapse with a tented roof. At the rear, the roof extends over the three-storey scullery outshut on the left, which has a canted corner and three-light casement windows with glazing bars, along with a plank door, all set under segmental arches. The right side at the rear is blind.

Inside, the central stair hall features a dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed mahogany handrail. The left room, the parlour, has a 19th-century marble chimneypiece. The kitchen on the right has a large fireplace with a range and a 19th-century chimneypiece, along with cupboards on either side that have panelled doors. The panelled doors and other joinery appear to be intact.
