Description
This barn, located about 70 yards east of Aylton Court, is likely from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It features a rubble plinth that supports timber-framing, which is three panels high to the wall-plate, with brick infill and a weatherboarded west gable topped with a slate roof. The barn has six bays that are aligned roughly east to west. The north elevation includes opposed segmentally-headed full-height ledged doors leading to two threshing floors, each situated one bay in from the end bays, and diamond ventilator patterns in the brick infill. Inside, the trusses over the threshing floors have collars and angle struts connecting to the principals, while the east gable truss includes queen struts from the tie to the collar, along with angle struts from the tie to the principals. This barn is a significant feature in the farmyard of Aylton Court, alongside another barn and an attached cow house located about 40 yards to the north.
