Description

This building is a lodge dating from the 1870s, originally part of the Thinghill Grange Estate, located on the north side of A 465 in Withington. It is constructed from grey-green rock-faced coursed rubble, with quoins and dressings made of red sandstone ashlar, topped with steep hipped slate roofs. The lodge features an asymmetrical plan and is designed in a picturesque Gothic style.

It stands two storeys high with roll mouldings along the eaves. The structure is essentially two bays wide, with the right bay oriented towards the drive, which is offset by a turret that has a clasping projection to the north-west. A prominent feature of the lodge is the bartizan at the north-east corner, while the drive side features a circular turret topped with a conical roof.

The windows are set under pointed arches and include one and two-light casements with chamfered reveals. The entrance is located to the left of the turret. Surrounding the lodge is a wooden wicket fence with quatrefoil cut-outs on top of a red sandstone coping that forms a dwarf garden wall, which is punctuated by piers at intervals. Wrought iron gates and gate piers are present to the north-east but are in a damaged condition and are not included in the listing.
