Description
The Market Cross in Bingham Market Place is a monumental structure built in 1861, likely designed by T.C. Hine, in memory of John Hassall. It is constructed in the Gothic revival style using sandstone ashlar and features an octagonal Westmorland slate roof. The cross has an octagonal plan with an eight-bay arcade supported by round piers, which have moulded capitals and bases, and are topped with moulded pointed arches. The spandrels include quatrefoils with monograms and decorative ballflower ornament. The moulded eaves are adorned with leaf carving and incised text that reads, "This Market Cross has been re-built in affectionate remembrance of John Hassall of Shelford by his Friends and Neighbours. An.Dmi MDCCCLXI. To be beloved is better than All Bargains." At the top, an octagonal lantern features quatrefoil windows and a lead roof with four gabled and crested lucarnes, topped with an elaborate finial cross.
