Description

Number 7 Union Street is a building that originally served as butchers and an abattoir, and was formerly two houses. It dates from around 1800 and was converted in the mid-19th century. The structure is made of painted brick with ashlar dressings and features pantile roofs with three gable stacks.

The street front has a three-storey section on the left, which includes a doorway in a round-headed opening with a stable door. To the right, there are two shop windows. Above these, there are two large glazing bar sash windows with ashlar wedge lintels and double keystones, followed by two smaller glazing bar sash windows. To the right, there is a two-storey block with a plain sash window, and further right is a cart entrance featuring two large plank doors with a chamfered lintel, above which are two glazing bar sashes.

At the rear, there is an open yard. To the east, there is a single-storey outbuilding with a tall stack, a single plank door, and a two-light sliding sash window. The rear also includes a single-storey abattoir range, which has a stable door on the left, followed by a doorway with a wooden gabled porch and a boxed pump. Beyond this is a wide upper opening with plank shutters, and further along are two large entrances with sliding doors.

Inside, there is a brick vaulted cellar, and the staircase consists of a single flight with a return, featuring a moulded handrail, stick balusters, and turned newel posts. The interior also contains two Victorian fireplaces, and most rooms have spine beams. The abattoir at the rear has rows of hooks attached to the encased roof structure.
