Description
The Birkin Mausoleum, located in Wilford Hill Cemetery, was built in 1921 and is designed in a classical style. Constructed from Portland stone with bronze fittings, it resembles a small temple. The west front features two fluted Roman Doric columns that support an entablature and pediment topped with an acroterion. This front has a pair of low bronze gates. The east front is similar but includes plain pilasters and full-height bronze gates. Inside, there are three panels on either side with bronze plaques commemorating various members of the Birkin family who are buried in the nearby vault, although the plaque on the left at the east end is now missing. The interior boasts a plastered barrel vaulted ceiling. The mausoleum was erected in memory of the Birkin family, notable lace manufacturers from Nottingham, and it houses the remains of Stanley and Margret Birkin along with their four children: Thomas, Henry, Ida, and Archie. Henry Birkin, known as Tim, was one of the famous 'Bentley Boys' who competed successfully at Le Mans for the Bentley Racing Team.
