Description

The Hermitage is a house that has been converted into church rooms, a museum, and flats. It dates from the 16th century and was remodeled in 1708, with further alterations and extensions in the late 18th and late 19th centuries. The building is constructed of red brick and rubble, topped with a plain tile roof that has a brick-coped left gable with kneelers. There is a large external gable stack made of rubble with a red brick shaft on the right side, and a similar larger stack on a stepped plinth to the front left. The building features a deep rubble plinth, an eaves band, and a first-floor band that extends to the left gable wall.

It is two storeys high, plus a cellar and garret, and has two bays. There are two doorways with glazed double doors, and above them is a single casement window with a tripartite casement window to the right. The left gable wall has a single blocked cellar opening, with a single tripartite casement above and a blocked opening to the left. Above this is another similar casement. In the garret, there is a smaller casement window with a band extending over it, and below is an ashlar plaque inscribed "BFM 1708". At the rear of the main front, there is a late 18th-century wing with additional 19th-century extensions. The interior may contain a 16th-century stone fireplace with a relieving arch above it.
