Description

The K6 telephone kiosk is a standardised design dating from the 20th century, built of cast iron and painted red overall with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. Applied crowns are positioned on the top panels, and a shallow-curved roof displays rectangular white signs reading “TELEPHONE”. Modernised internal equipment is present. The kiosk is intact and in fair condition.

It is situated on a grassed area at a staggered crossroads in the southern part of the village, approximately 60 metres south of the Grade I listed Church of St John the Baptist. The Beeches and Outbuilding (Grade II) on Little Lane stand 15 metres to the east, the Fruit Farm on South End (Grade II) is approximately 25 metres to the north-west, and the Nunnery (Grade II) is approximately 45 metres to the west. The kiosk forms the centre of this group of listed buildings.

The K6 telephone kiosk is a significant example of 20th-century industrial design, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 to commemorate King George V’s Silver Jubilee. It was developed from his earlier K2 telephone kiosk design of 1924, with a more streamlined appearance, compact size, and cost-effective mass production. Over 10,000 K6 kiosks were produced; many were replaced in the 1960s but remain an iconic feature of Britain's streetscapes.

The kiosk is designated at Grade II primarily because of its strong visual relationship with neighbouring listed buildings, its close proximity to a Grade I listed building, and its representative presence within a village setting illustrating an important 20th-century design.
