Description
The K6 telephone kiosk is a standardised design made of cast iron, painted red overall with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides, and with applied crowns on the top panels, rather than perforated ones. Rectangular white display signs read 'TELEPHONE' beneath the shallow-curved roof. Modern internal equipment has been installed. The red paint is flaking in many places, and the kiosk leans to one side, but it retains all its glass windows. It stands on the village green, located in front of the Grade I listed Church of St Radegund to the north and the Grade II listed Low Farmhouse to the east.
The K6 telephone kiosk is a significant example of 20th-century industrial design, having been designed in 1935 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V’s Silver Jubilee. It developed from his earlier K2 design of 1924 and was a more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective design. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were produced, retaining a recognisable presence on Britain’s streetscapes.
The K6 kiosk is designated at Grade II for its iconic 20th-century design by Giles Gilbert Scott and for its group value, contributing to the visual relationship with the nearby Grade I and Grade II listed buildings.
