Description

The gateway to the former House of Correction, now a house, along with the adjoining house to the left, is a notable structure in Southwell. The gateway was built in 1807 by Richard Ingleman and is dedicated as a war memorial from around 1919. The adjoining house dates to approximately 1870.

The gateway features ashlar and brick construction with hipped slate roofs and a single side wall stack. Its lofty single-storey front has rusticated quoins and an entablature. A prominent central feature projects out and includes a round-headed arch that frames a heavily rusticated doorway. This doorway is adorned with a bronze memorial plaque inscribed "Carey & Sons Ltd., Southwell" and is flanked by wrought iron railings. Above the door is a decorative dummy portcullis.

The rear elevation of the gateway is two storeys high and has five windows, with a central canted two-storey bay window and a central 20th-century Gothick door. The windows are primarily plain sashes.

The adjoining house is constructed of brick with stone and features blue and yellow brick dressings. It has a chamfered plinth, a cogged first-floor band, and polychrome dentilled eaves. This two-storey house has a four-window range and an off-centre two-storey projecting bay with flanking buttresses and a pedimented gable, which includes a pair of round-headed plain sashes. Below this bay is a moulded round-headed doorway with dentilled imposts and an overlight, leading to a diamond raised panelled door. Each floor has round-cornered plain sashes on either side. To the right, there is a hipped two-storey projection with a single plain sash on each floor, the lower one being segment-headed. In the return angle, there is a 20th-century segment-headed door.
